My 4 Favorite Mobster Movies

Published

on

Mobster Movies

As an Irish and Italian American, I’ve always held a deep fascination with mobster movies. I think a large part of it is because they are the most readily available, most widely consumed portrayal of my cultural identity in mass media. It’s especially interesting, I think, because although modern-day cultural identities of Irish and Italian Americans have in many ways become assimilated into “whiteness,” this old ethnicization of these individuals lives on in America’s cultural imagination through the iconography of gangster flicks. From Francis Ford Coppola to Martin Scorsese, countless prestigious directors have attempted to give their own unique spin to the genre. Personally, I find these incredibly interesting and amusing, and they are some of my favorite movies to watch. I’ve picked four of my favorites here, so if by some odd chance you’re looking for a list to get you started in the genre — look no further.

GOODFELLAS (1990)

Martin Scorsese’s various renditions of the Italian-American mob are some of the most iconic in the genre. Of them, none hit the mark quite like Goodfellas. If one is looking for a classic, fun mob movie, then this one is the perfect choice. The plot never lets up, and the film is a nonstop flurry of action, raucous laughter, and drugs, which is, put simply, exhilarating to watch. Goodfellas sees young Italian-American actors Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro deliver some of their most memorable performances in the prime of their careers. Pesci’s crazy, gunslinging Tommy Devito, for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, is especially unforgettable. Whilst Scorses’s depiction of mob life is posed as a glamorous and charming alternative to the tepid 9 to 5 life, it also importantly emphasizes how fleeting it is. In this way, it is the perfect encapsulation of the dangerous allure of the lifestyle.

SCARFACE (1983)

Brian De Palma’s Scarface is a bloody, coke-fueled take on the classic American rags to riches story. Unlike the other movies on this list which follow Irish and Italian mobs, Scarface explores Cuban refugee Tony Montana’s journey to the top of Miami’s criminal underworld. The result is, and I cannot stress this enough, quite possibly the most hectic movie I have ever seen. The first half hour of the movie features a full-blown, incredibly graphic chainsaw sequence, and after that scene I couldn’t help but ask myself how this level of tension could possibly be topped for the rest of the plot’s development. Much to my surprise, somehow the rest of the movie delivered. For, even though the infamous “Say hello to my little friend” scene at the film’s crescendo is the one that is emblazoned in the memory of popular culture, the movie doesn’t get enough credit for the countless other memorable sequences that make up the plot. Coupled with the film’s stunning ’80s Miami Vice-style visuals and a career-defining performance from Al Pacino, Scarface’s story, that classic tale of a man who lets his power get to his head, is a must-see.

GOMORRA (2008)

Now, this wouldn’t be a true mob movie list without the inclusion of an actual Italian movie on it; hence, I bring to you Italian director Matteo Garrone’s bleak depiction of the all-powerful Neapolitan Mafia in Gomorra. Where other mobster movies are flashy and stylized, this one pulls no punches in illustrating the bleak realities of the mafioso lifestyle and the conditions of poverty it is borne out of as it really is. The director’s neorealist approach is a breath of fresh air for the genre, and the movie does a great job of illuminating the lives of foot soldiers, low-level street pushers, and regular citizens who make up the underlying cogs of the Mafia machine but whose stories are often forgotten. There are no laughing card game scenes or larger-than-life colorful characters in this mob movie; only a heaviness and an atmosphere of impending hopelessness throughout, which is fitting of the real Mafia’s reign of terror in Italy.

THE DEPARTED (2006)

What immediately jumps out about the Brad Pitt-produced The Departed is its star-studded roster of actors. The film juxtaposes Leonardo Dicaprio as an undercover informant in the Irish Mob with Matt Damon as a mole in the Boston Police Department, which in and of itself already feels like two industry titans convening. On top of this, the film also features remarkable performances from Jack Nicholson as Irish mob boss Frank Costello, Mark Wahlberg as a police sergeant, and even a random side character role for Alec Baldwin. The movie’s Boston setting and accents are an excellent backdrop for its cast of indelible characters, and the dialogue of the film cannot be commended enough. These elements create an enticing bedrock for the film’s plot to be built on, a plot which in its own right shines as one of the best facets of the film. It is one you will not soon forget, and it is filled with twists and turns which give new meaning to the phrase “it isn’t over until it’s over.”

Firstly, these carpets are designed to be stain-resistant, making them perfect for busy households with young children who are prone to spills and accidents. Unlike traditional carpets that require professional cleaning services or expensive products for stain removal, washable carpets can simply be cleaned with water and mild detergents. This not only saves time but also reduces the cost of maintaining your carpet over time.

This makes them an excellent option for homes with pets who may shed or track dirt onto the carpet frequently. Additionally, these carpets have anti-static properties which prevent pet hair from sticking onto the fibers, making it easier to vacuum and maintain a clean floor.
  • For Those Who Suffer From Allergies or Respiratory Issues: Furthermore, choosing washable carpets can also benefit those who suffer from allergies or respiratory issues as they trap dust particles instead of releasing them into the air like traditional carpet fibers do. Regular washing can effectively remove allergens from the carpet surface, promoting a healthier and cleaner living environment.

With their stain-resistant properties, durability, easy maintenance, and hygienic benefits, they offer the ultimate solution for modern living. Helping Kids Develop Healthy Online Relationships

Healthy Online Relationships

In today’s digital age, children are more connected than ever, navigating online spaces as naturally as they do the real world. As they interact with peers, play games, and explore the internet, it’s crucial to guide them towards fostering healthy online relationships. Teaching them the values of respect, empathy, and digital etiquette can lay the foundation for positive online interactions that benefit their social and emotional development. This article delves into practical ways parents and educators can support kids in cultivating meaningful and safe online relationships.

The Evolution of Online Communication

The digital landscape has undergone significant changes over the years, offering diverse platforms and tools for communication. From the early days of chat rooms and emails to today’s social media platforms and multiplayer games, children have more avenues than ever to connect with others. While this connectivity presents opportunities for learning and socializing, it also introduces new challenges.

Risks and Challenges Children Face Online

As children explore the online world, they may encounter various risks, including exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and privacy breaches. Understanding these potential challenges is the first step in guiding them towards safe and responsible online interactions. Parents and educators must stay informed about the latest trends and issues to provide timely guidance and support.

Setting Ground Rules for Online Interaction

Establishing Clear Guidelines

Creating a set of clear and understandable rules for online interaction is essential for guiding children’s behavior in the digital world. These rules can include guidelines on sharing personal information, interacting with strangers, and handling disagreements online. By setting boundaries, children can navigate online spaces with confidence, knowing what is expected of them.

Encouraging Open Communication

Open dialogue between children and adults is crucial for building trust and understanding in online interactions. Encourage children to share their online experiences, ask questions, and express concerns without fear of judgment. This communication can help identify potential issues early on and allow for constructive conversations about navigating challenges safely.

Educating on Cyber Safety

Identifying Trustworthy Sources

Teaching children to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources online is a vital skill for their digital literacy. Encourage them to verify information from multiple sources before accepting it as fact. By promoting critical thinking and research skills, you help them become discerning consumers of online content, reducing the risk of misinformation.

Recognizing and Handling Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a pervasive issue that can have serious emotional and psychological impacts on children. Educate them about what constitutes cyberbullying and how to respond appropriately if they encounter it. Teach them strategies such as blocking the bully, saving evidence, and seeking help from trusted adults. Empower them to stand up against online harassment and support their peers in similar situations.

Role-playing and Real-life Examples

Engage children in role-playing exercises and discuss real-life examples to illustrate the impact of their online actions. This hands-on approach allows them to experience different scenarios and understand the consequences of their behavior. Encourage them to reflect on their experiences and learn from both positive and negative interactions to develop better online habits.

Engaging in Joint Online Activities

Participating in Online Games and Projects

Joining children in their online activities can be a fun and educational way to bond with them while monitoring their digital behavior. Participate in multiplayer games, educational apps, or collaborative projects that interest them. This shared experience allows you to observe their online interactions firsthand and provide immediate feedback on their behavior.

Supervising Without Hovering

While it’s essential to monitor children’s online activities, it’s equally important to give them some autonomy to explore and learn independently. Find a balance between supervision and allowing them to navigate online spaces on their own. Trusting them with responsibilities while being available for guidance when needed fosters confidence and self-reliance.

Creating a Supportive Environment for Open Dialogue

Listening Actively to Children’s Online Experiences

Create a safe and non-judgmental space where children feel comfortable sharing their online experiences. Listen attentively to their stories, concerns, and questions about the digital world. By actively engaging in these conversations, you demonstrate empathy and understanding, building trust and openness in your relationship.

Addressing Concerns and Challenges Together

When children encounter challenges or face dilemmas online, approach these situations as teachable moments rather than punitive actions. Collaborate with them to find solutions, discuss strategies for handling similar situations in the future, and reinforce the importance of responsible online behavior. By working together, you empower children to make informed decisions and navigate the digital world confidently.

Conclusion

Navigating the digital world can be both exciting and challenging for children. By providing guidance, setting clear boundaries, and fostering open communication, parents and educators can help them develop healthy and positive online relationships. Remember, it’s not just about restricting access but empowering them with the knowledge and skills to make responsible choices. Together, we can create a safer and more enjoyable online environment for our children.
